!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , the local Subaru dealer cross threaded one of my lug nuts when rotating my tires during my 30k mile service last week. When I tried to swap from snow to summer tires yesterday, the wheel stud broke.

In the end, it was faster and easier for me to just replace the thing myself. It’s a $3 part, and my car is already up and running again (on summer tires, even). The dealer would’ve had to book me in for an appointment, and even if it was ASAP, it would still be another day out of the office for me. I already look bad for working from home the day after a two week vacation. I would’ve lost far more time having them make it right than it took me to do it myself.

That doesn’t mean the dealer is off the hook. I was quite clear with them that it was they who cross threaded the lug nut, not me. Their records confirm that they rotated my tires and did it then. They said they’d speak to the tech who did the work. In fact all of my lug nuts were overtorqued, but fortunately only the one was cross threaded. So they all came off and went back on again, this time with my summer wheels.

I apologize in advance to readers in New England for causing the next spring snowstorm.

The tire shop I go to did this to me. I got a flat and broke off a lug trying to change it. Called them and they said they'd fix it asap and they did. Got another flat not long after only to find they cross threaded 2 lugs on the same wheel as last time. I said screw it and fixed it myself. Had to buy new lug nuts too. It was cheap and relatively easy. Now I have a 3 pound hammer.

Enjoy your free oil change(s) or lifetime free rotations!

At least they owned up to the mistake. Dealers I have worked for would have told you to pound sand, as they cannot prove that you didn’t have the wheel off 100 times since the service.

I’ve had my summers on for two weeks now. So far I’ve delivered in sub-freezing temps a few times, but haven’t seen any snow yet. Fingers crossed we don’t get any until Nov or Dec.

I was responsible for last week’s so good to know who’s on the hook this time around.

I’m lucky in that since they included wheel locks with my car, I have four (now three) spare lug nuts, so I didn’t have to buy one.

Last time I went to a shop for new tires, they forgot to tighten one of the wheels down. Thought I had a blown bearing or something when the car was wobbling until I stopped and saw that I already lost one nut, two more were about to come off, and the wheel was diagonal. This is the same shop that keeps trying to sell me crash bolts for my MR2 when doing an alignment even though the car came standard with them. I’m not sure they even know what eccentric bolts are. :/

Did you use a torque wrench to check if they over tightened the lugs?

I didn't measure it, but I could feel it took far more force to remove the lug nuts than it did to tighten them to spec with a torque wrench afterward.

Are you thinking they were like ten foot-pounds off? How accurate is this biceps powered torque wrench? It often takes more force to remove a fastener than it was installed with. The tech that crossthreaded it was a douche for sure though
